Mass Invariants in Riemannian Geometry

Geometry at Infinity

Luleå University of Technology January 11-15, 2027 Luleå, Sweden

Overview

The notion of mass in Riemannian geometry has developed into a rich theory of geometric invariants for noncompact manifolds. Stemming from general relativity via the ADM mass of asymptotically flat manifolds and its positivity and rigidity properties, the subject now encompasses a broad spectrum of geometric settings, including asymptotically hyperbolic and asymptotically locally flat manifolds. Recent years have seen significant advances in the understanding of these mass-type invariants through spinorial methods and Weitzenböck formulas, Hamiltonian and divergence identities, and analyses of asymptotic symmetries and conserved charges. Although most mass invariants are intertwined with scalar curvature, generalisations of mass invariants to nonlinear curvature invariants, such as Gauss–Bonnet–Chern and more general Lovelock-type masses, have since been developed. Progress has been made on questions of positivity and stability, including low-regularity settings, and the geometric characterisation of mass minimisers.

Confirmed participants

A list of confirmed participants will be posted here closer to the event and updated periodically.

Schedule

A detailed schedule will be provided closer to the event.

Other activities

Luleå is near the arctic circle so there are many winter activities to do nearby and there should be some good opportunities to see the northern lights, weather permitting.

Practical information

Venue

The workshop will take place at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. All talks will be held in lecture hall E632 in the E house.

Travel

Luleå Airport is connected to both the city centre and the university by bus (bus number 4 for both destinations) taking around 13 minutes to reach the city centre and 30 minutes to the university. Tickets can be bought on board with most bank/credit cards.

Accommodation

There are several hotel and hostel options in Luleå, many in the city centre with a direct and regular bus to the university. There are some budget alternatives below.

City centre:

Elite Stadshotellet Luleå

Hotel on the main street in the city centre opposite the central city park. They have offered a 10 % discount for the conference week for participants booking with this link: Discount link.

Best Western Plus Savoy Luleå

Also located centrally, on the other side of the main street from the previous two hotels.

Closer to the university:

Scandic Luleå

This hotel is between the city centre and the university, about 3km from the city centre and 2km from the university. This time of year, the temperature is regularly below minus 20 degrees Celcius so while this hotel is likely the best option for walking to the university, make sure to be well-prepared for the weather.

Other:

City Sleep

Budget option. Hostel in the city centre near the main hotel recommendations. Very simple accommodation, but good for those on a budget.

Park Hotell

Budget option. Simple hotel in the city centre very close to the bus stop, a little cheaper than the recommendations above.

Forenom Aparthotel Luleå

Newly built self-contained apartment hotel just at the edge of the city centre. There is a bus to the university that leaves directly from here or a 10-15 minute walk to the main bus stop in the city centre.
